The Saemaul Women’s Association of Yeonpyeong-myeon Township, Ongjin-gun County (Chairwoman Kim Yeong-sun), practiced neighborly care ahead of Chuseok by visiting about 70 vulnerable households in the township to deliver laver.

On the 21st, the association held its “Saemaul Women’s Association Chuseok Laver Sharing” event, reaching some 70 households — including elderly residents living alone and multicultural families — who may face greater hardship during the holiday. The event was organized so that all residents of Yeonpyeong-myeon could share in the warmth of the holiday and spend a comfortable Chuseok.

Association members who took part personally visited each target household to deliver the laver. In the process, they also worked to ease the loneliness and sense of isolation that neighbors can feel during the holiday season, checking on elderly residents’ well-being and keeping them company.

Yeonpyeong-myeon, a border area on the westernmost frontier of the West Sea, has a high proportion of elderly residents living alone amid an aging population, and such holiday sharing activities by private, grassroots organizations are seen as helping fill gaps in the local welfare safety net.

Kim Yeong-sun, chairwoman of the Yeonpyeong-myeon Saemaul Women’s Association, said, “It has always been heartbreaking to see elderly residents spending the holiday alone and lonely, so it is very rewarding to be able to offer them comfort, even in a small way.” She added, “Going forward, the Yeonpyeong-myeon Saemaul Women’s Association will continue to take the lead in building a warm Yeonpyeong-myeon by never turning away from the difficulties our neighbors face.”
