Incheon City Rolls Out ‘Glowing Work Trousers’ to Keep Seniors Safe Walking at Night

Everyday clothing fitted with reflective features to prevent traffic accidents among rural seniors

Incheon City is producing and distributing ‘glowing work trousers’ fitted with light-reflecting features to reduce nighttime traffic accidents involving elderly residents in rural areas. The initiative is drawing attention for building a practical safety measure into the very clothing that seniors already wear on a daily basis.

Incheon Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Chan-dae) announced that it is launching a campaign to produce and distribute ‘glowing work trousers’ with added light-reflecting features, designed to make elderly residents in rural areas more easily visible to drivers when walking at night.

The campaign was conceived around the characteristics of the clothing that seniors like to wear in their everyday lives. Rather than requiring them to obtain new safety gear, the idea is to build reflective features into the clothes they wear every day, so that the risk of accidents can be lowered naturally without any special effort. It also takes into account the fact that, given the scarcity of streetlights in rural areas, seniors walking at night are often not seen by drivers in time, leading to accidents.

The ‘glowing work trousers’ were distributed on a trial basis this past August to participants in a traffic-accident prevention education program that Incheon City’s Traffic Safety Division carried out in Ganghwa-gun. In an on-site survey of the 200 seniors who took part in the program at the time, 97.5 percent of respondents (195 people) said they felt that walking at night was dangerous because the roads were dark, and 98.5 percent (197 people) said they thought the glowing work trousers would help with safety, confirming strong support and a clear need.

The city plans to continue distributing the ‘glowing work trousers’ to seniors in the region through traffic-accident prevention education programs going forward.

In addition, to mark ‘Seniors’ Day’ on October 2, the city will also hold an online participation event. Held through Incheon City’s official YouTube channel, the event will award 100 pairs of ‘glowing work trousers’ and 50 mobile coffee coupons to participants selected by drawing from those who leave comments. The event runs from September 29 to October 5. The related video can be viewed on YouTube (https://youtu.be/sU7Gtr8sf9U).

Park Rok-sam, spokesperson for the city, said, ‘We prepared this campaign to protect the safety of our seniors,’ adding, ‘We hope the glowing work trousers will spread widely and become a reliable safeguard protecting even more seniors.’
