Incheon’s Yeongjong-gu District (Mayor Son Hwa-jeong) officially opened the Yongyu Integrated Community Center on Aug. 26, a public multipurpose facility that provides health, cultural and welfare services for residents of the Yongyu area in one location. Established the same year Yeongjong-gu launched as an independent autonomous district, the facility is expected to serve as a base infrastructure driving balanced development in Yongyu, an area that had been relatively left behind in development.

The opening ceremony was held that afternoon in the third-floor conference hall of the center. About 70 people attended, including Mayor Son Hwa-jeong, Incheon International Airport Corp. Acting President Kim Beom-ho, Yeongjong-gu District Council Speaker Choi Mi-ja, district and city council members, officials from the Yongyu Noise Countermeasures Committee, and local residents. The event opened with a congratulatory performance by the Yongyu-dong Residents’ Autonomy Council, followed by a progress report, congratulatory remarks, the presentation of plaques of appreciation, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The center was built on a site at 75-1 Nambuk-ro 6-gil in Yeongjong-gu, with one basement level and three above-ground floors, a site area of 4,137 square meters and a total floor area of 1,866.06 square meters. A total of 11.79 billion won was invested in the project, with costs shared among Yeongjong-gu District, Incheon Metropolitan City and Incheon International Airport Corp.

By floor, the first floor houses the Yongyu Public Health Branch, which is already providing medical services, and a farm and fishery direct-sales outlet selling local specialty products from the Yongyu area is set to open there in the future. The second floor holds the Yongyu-dong Residents’ Autonomy Center, equipped with a computer room, a language lab, a small library and a multipurpose room, which will serve as a space for residents’ learning and leisure activities. The third floor is set to be used as a community space for residents who have long suffered from aircraft noise.

The facility carries significant meaning in that it provides tangible living infrastructure for Yongyu-area residents, who are located near Incheon International Airport and have long endured inconveniences such as aircraft noise and development restrictions. The district expects the center to serve as a hub delivering health, cultural and welfare services in a comprehensive way, and to serve as a catalyst for realizing balanced regional development.

At the opening ceremony, Mayor Son Hwa-jeong said, “Yongyu is a representative marine tourism hub in the greater Seoul metropolitan area, blessed with beautiful natural surroundings, and it holds immense growth potential as a key city supporting Incheon International Airport, the gateway through which Korea reaches out to the world.”

Mayor Son went on to say, “I hope the Yongyu Integrated Community Center becomes a place where healthy encounters and enjoyable learning come together,” adding, “We will continue to spare no interest and support to bring real vitality to the lives of Yongyu-area residents.”
