The Incheon Metropolitan City Agricultural Technology Center (Mayor Park Chan-dae) announced that it held the Domestic Rice Consumption Promotion Rice Tteokguk Sharing Event on August 18 to commemorate Rice Day.
The event was organized together with the Korea Life Improvement Association Incheon Metropolitan City Chapter, a learning group nurtured by the Agricultural Technology Center. It was intended to honor the sweat and dedication of farmers while revitalizing rice consumption, which has been declining recently due to Westernized eating habits and other factors.
Rice Day, on August 18, was created based on the observation that the Chinese character for rice, 米, can be broken down into the components eight-ten-eight (八十八), or eighty-eight. It carries the meaning that a farmer’s hands are needed eighty-eight times to produce a single grain of rice.
On the day, members of the Life Improvement Association personally delivered a total of 100 boxes, or 1,200 servings, of easy-to-prepare rice tteokguk to citizens visiting the civil affairs offices of district offices in the area. Beyond a simple sharing of food, the event served as an occasion to inform citizens of the nutritional value and excellence of domestic rice.
This sharing of processed rice products carried significance in that it let citizens experience firsthand, in daily life, that rice can be consumed not only as cooked rice but in various forms. Easy-to-prepare processed rice products are drawing attention as a new avenue for rice consumption in a dietary environment where single-person households and dual-income families are increasing.
An official from the Life Improvement Association who took part in the event said, ‘We prepared this sharing to mark Rice Day and to share with citizens the preciousness of rice and the value of agriculture and rural communities.’ The official added, ‘We hope consumption of our domestic rice will expand further in everyday life through convenient and hearty processed rice products, and we will continue to carry out various activities to promote the consumption of our domestic agricultural products.’
Lee Hee-jung, director of the city’s Agricultural Technology Center, said, ‘Together with the Life Improvement Association, whose members are local rural women leaders, we are joining forces to promote rice consumption and spread the value of agriculture.’ He added, ‘We will continue to pursue various extension programs to spread a healthy food culture among citizens and to widely promote the excellence of our domestic rice.’
