Yeonpyeong-myeon (Township Chief Hwang Jun-cheol) of Ongjin-gun County said it collected a total of 5 tons of household and marine waste by holding its “June Summer Clean-Up Days” on two occasions, on the 13th and 25th, ahead of the peak summer tourism season. The effort aims to provide residents and tourists with a pleasant living and tourism environment and to spread a culture of practicing marine environment conservation.

The cleanup activities were carried out as a public-private joint initiative in cooperation between Yeonpyeong-myeon and the Yeonpyeong-myeon Volunteer Center. The activities took on added significance in that officials from the Volunteer Center, who have long carried out various volunteer activities such as sharing side dishes of love, took part voluntarily and practiced the value of environmental conservation together with the local community.

The first round, held on the 13th, took place around Hamsang Park, an area heavily used by residents and tourists, where about 3 tons of household waste was collected from around the park. In the second round, conducted on the 25th, about 2 tons of marine waste was gathered around Dangseom Wharf.

Yeonpyeong-myeon Township Chief Hwang Jun-cheol said, “I am deeply grateful to all the officials of the Yeonpyeong-myeon Volunteer Center who actively took part in the environmental cleanup activities despite the hot weather,” adding, “I hope the local community, including village heads, the women’s association and related organizations, will join the third Clean-Up Day scheduled for the 30th and pool their efforts to make Yeonpyeong-myeon clean.”
