While the opening of the Sindo Peace Bridge has improved land accessibility, it is also expected to alter the conditions for using the Jangbong ferry route, prompting Ongjin-gun County to prepare countermeasures aimed at minimizing inconvenience to residents and preserving a stable ferry operation system.

The result is the “Jangbong Route Operation Support Project.” Through this project, Ongjin-gun County intends to respond to changing transportation conditions while guaranteeing residents’ stable mobility rights.

Specifically, Ongjin-gun County has signed an agreement with the ferry operator to provide financial support starting Aug. 1, keeping the current 13 daily round trips on the Jangbong-Samok route unchanged.

Governor Jang Jeong-min said, “Even as transportation conditions change, the mobility rights of island residents must be guaranteed.” He added, “We will strengthen the public nature of maritime transportation and build a stable maritime transportation system that island residents can genuinely feel the benefits of.”

This measure is significant as a preemptive response to prevent the expansion of land transportation networks, such as the opening of a large bridge, from inadvertently leading to a reduction in sea routes and narrowing islanders’ transportation options.

Ongjin-gun County plans to continue monitoring changes in transportation conditions and to prepare necessary support measures going forward.
